This new name brings together all of the company’s products under the same banner: Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus and Portal. On the design side, the company is adorned with a new name, but also a new logo, halfway between the infinity symbol and the shape of virtual reality helmets.

If the announcement of the group’s new identity caused a lot of reaction on social networks, thus leading many Memes and other trolls, other Internet users quickly drew parallels with the problematic conflicts that Facebook is currently facing. Indeed, the group is singled out in the history of the Facebook Papers, which deplores the mismanagement of information and the loss of control of the algorithm that regulates content on Facebook. Could this then be a way for the company to distract users? Hard to say.

The metaverse represents an immersive experience in a three-dimensional virtual environment, through which users can socialize via an avatar or hologram. Behind the change of identity of the Facebook group therefore hides a precise but: “Meta’s goal will be to bring metaverses to life and help people connect, find communities and grow businesses. », explains the company. After having revolutionized exchanges with applications such as Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp, the company wants to go beyond 2D screens to turn to more immersive experiences.

At the same time, the group indicates that the metaverse will not be integrated by a single company, but that its purpose is “to accelerate the development of foundational technologies, social platforms and creative tools to bring metaverses to life, and to weave these technologies through our social media applications. »

What about other Facebook Group apps?

With the arrival of Meta, what are the consequences for the social applications used on a daily basis? A priori, there is not really: the Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp applications will keep the original name and the user accounts will not be affected by this new identity.

On the other hand, the Oculus brand, bought in 2014 by the Facebook group (Meta), should fade away to take the name of Meta Quest. Same observation for Portal, which will be renamed Meta Portal in the coming months.

One thing is certain, the race for the metaverse is retained. It remains to be seen which of the tech giants impose themselves in this new universe which offers an almost infinite field of possibilities.
