In 2021, American heavyweights Amazon, Microsoft and Google captured 80% of the growth in French infrastructure public cloud spending. The 3 providers have captured 80% of market growth in public Cloud system and application infrastructure services with IaaS (Infrastructure as a service) and PaaS (Platform as a service).
An increase in Cloud business of 400 million euros in 2021
This growth weighs nearly 400 million euros of new business in one year. They leave only 20% for other French, European and global suppliers. This is shown by the study published by Markess. Amazon with AWS (Amazon Web Services) is already largely dominant with 46% market share. It is continuing its development on the French market at an intense pace and is driving growth from IaaS and PaaS.
With a plethora of offers, AWS is now present in all strata of the French economy, from SMEs to very large companies, including publishers and startups. Microsoft is the growth champion with +53% in 2021. The service provider has invested in Cloud Azure and synergies with its Office 365 software offers, CRM, ERP, Analytics, etc. Third heavyweight, Google Cloud is lagging behind in adoption on the French market, but it is starting to catch up with the two leaders with +48% growth in 2021.
The rest of the suppliers in France weigh 30% of the market
The other Cloud service providers, including OVH, IBM, Oracle, Orange Business Services, Scaleway (Iliad group of Xavier Niel), T-Systems or 3D Outscale (Dassault group), have together achieved 23% growth and capture the third (29%) of the market. For the most part, these providers cannot compete with the colossal investments of American heavyweights, valued in billions of dollars annually, and focus on specific segments. They focus on cyber security, application platforms, sovereign cloud or hybrid cloud management and multi-cloud.
The financial results of the American giants are up sharply for the 1st quarter of 2022 with +32% for Microsoft Cloud at 23.4 billion dollars, +37% for Amazon Web Service at 18.4 billion dollars and +44% for Google Cloud at $5.8 billion.
A Cloud market segmented into 3 types of offers
The Cloud infrastructure market continues its segmentation with positions that are now more clearly established between providers of public Cloud solutions, providers of managed services around the Cloud and private Cloud players. However, the craze for the marriage of environments in hybrid and multi-cloud strategies tends to muddy the waters.
Historical players in hosting, outsourcing and private Cloud are forging partnerships to combine their solutions with public IaaS and PaaS offers. This is the case, for example, of Orange Business Services, Atos, Neurones, Capgemini, and now Kyndril, the former IBM Global Technology Services. At the same time, the giants Amazon Web Services, Microsoft and Google are offering new offers to distribute the Cloud as close as possible to users.
