The operation rate can be confusing, since it indicates the period during which at least 50% of the chargers were in operation
Tesla says its network of Superchargers is becoming more reliable as it reached 99.96% uptime in 2021.
That’s more than the uptime posted every year before and especially in 2020, where the network saw a bit more downtime.
This sounds very impressive, but this figure is slightly misleading. This is because uptime is not the proportion of time that each individual charger was in operation, but rather the time that at least half of the chargers at each station were in working order.
This is good news though, as Supercharger stations tend to have multiple chargers, meaning that even if half of them are inoperable, motorists still have a few to use.
In effect. The global average suggests that each station has around 9 chargers, meaning there were at least 4 or 5 available to drivers at each station for 99.96% of the year.
This reduced number of working chargers might not even be a major drawback, since Supercharger’s network is still restricted to only Tesla vehicles in most parts of the world, which reduces the number of electric vehicles that can use them.
Along with increased grid reliability, Tesla says it has added 912 stations worldwide, all of which use new V3 Superchargers, capable of charging at rates of up to 250kW.
This has increased the number of stations worldwide to 3,724 and the total number of individual locations to 33,657, representing a 37% improvement over 2020.
Tesla thus continues to own its leading position in terms of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the world, a key selling point for the automaker’s cars and SUVs.
