Special commands are coming to Facebook Messenger: here’s how to use them

New features are available in Messenger. Facebook announced Tuesday, March 29 the addition of new text shortcuts in its messaging application. This tool allows you to perform actions by typing special commands in the text form of conversations, such as typing @ followed by a friend’s name to notify them directly. New options will be offered later to Messenger users.

“Whether you want to let everyone in a chat know about an important announcement, pay off a friend for lunch, or vent your frustration with a timely “(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻”), the new shortcuts of Messenger allows you to do this in the most efficient way possible,” writes the company.

Two commands make their appearance in the latest Messenger update. The first is to type @everyone (@everyone) to send an urgent notification to all attendees. This way, the message will show up on their screen as if you tagged them individually. This command also allows you to override any muting of the discussion on their part.

“@everyone is perfect for group callbacks, impromptu meetings, or when you need to bring brains together to find an answer to a pressing question,” Facebook writes.

Conversely, the second command allows you to send a message without the contacts being notified. To do this, start by typing the command /silent. Facebook explains that it’s a good way to communicate without disturbing loved ones with jet lag or during holidays, for example.

Other shortcuts will complete the list in the coming weeks. Among the first official orders, we find /gif to quickly insert a GIF without having to open the dedicated tab on an iPhone, /raise your shoulders to quickly send the text emoji ¯_(ツ)_/¯, /tapleflip to send the text emoji “(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻” and /Pay to send money to friends in markets where the feature is enabled. More commands will be added in the future.
