Huawei MateBook 16 review: a superb Windows PC that has nothing to envy to Apple MacBooks

The new machine from the Chinese manufacturer is strongly inspired by the laptops of its American competitor. And does it very well. What offer a new option to consumers for whom the design of computers from the apple brand has always been a reference.

Powerful laptops, meticulously designed down to the smallest detail, and flawless construction are rare. On a MacBook Pro of course, but under Windows, the choice remains limited. The opportunity to look at Huawei’s brand new PC, the MateBook 16. Because this model ticks all the boxes. Admittedly, it is largely inspired by Apple computers, but it does it brilliantly.

Impeccable finishes

So here we are in the presence of a laptop with generous dimensions, with a 16-inch screen and with just 2 kg on the scale. From the outside, it looks like two drops of water like a MacBook: same anodized aluminum shell, speakers on either side of the keyboard, large touchpad, white charger… The finishes are impeccable: everything is perfectly assembled, without any play. The hinge which allows the screen to be tilted has the good taste of being from a single tenant, resists what is necessary and gives an impression of welcome robustness. The keyboard keys, sufficiently spaced, are very pleasant to use even without a numeric keypad. And always this feeling of robustness, seriousness in construction.

Now let’s move on to the other big highlight of this machine: its screen. Its 3:2 ratio format is out of the ordinary and allows you to enjoy a large work or reading space. To browse the Internet, use photo editing software, word processing, etc. it’s a plus size compared to the classic 16:9. Anyway, it’s hard to go back. For films, we quickly adapt to black bands at the top and bottom.

Splendid image but prone to reflections

With her 2K resolution and its very pronounced contrast, the image is splendid and enhanced by very fine borders. With such a keyboard and such a screen, comfort is total. Especially since unless you push it to its limits, the PC remains silent at all times, at the cost of heating up sometimes a little high but still acceptable. Be careful though, the slab is shiny, so subject to reflections outdoors.

The audio part has not been forgotten and does the job, at its level of course. Do not expect to shake the walls with its bass. Same for the connectorswell supplied: 2 USB-C ports, 2 USB-A ports, 1 3.5 mm jack, 1 HDMI port.

The resemblance to a MacBook is striking. And that’s good !

On the performance side, only the players will pass their way. With its AMD Ryzen 7 5800H processor, 512 GB SSD and 16 GB of RAM, the MateBook 16 is at ease in any day-to-day situation. Windows reacts to the finger and the eye, we clearly feel that there is beautiful hardware under the hood. And not to spoil anything, the autonomy is there: a good day’s work away from the charger (which takes about three hours to bring the battery from 0 to 100%).

the only real downside, at a time when videoconferences are commonplace, comes from the camera. Placed between the F6 and F7 keys, it films from a particularly unflattering angle for the user! This is undoubtedly the price to pay to obtain such thin screen borders. Nothing prohibitive for as much, by moving back the machine a little, one can find an honorable compromise.

Huawei hits hard with its MateBook 16. This machine is a pleasure to use every day and has the luxury of being (almost) as elegant as a MacBook Pro, for a much lower price: just under €1,200 in this muscular configuration. Fans of ultra mobility will have no doubts, but those who are above all looking for a very well finished and durable Windows laptop for the home, the office or both will be served. And could of course take it on vacation.
