Automatically generated captions on videos in the stream
Instagram has just announced a new function eagerly awaited by its community. Now videos that will appear in the feed will have auto-generated captions. Concretely, as soon as a user watches a video, subtitles generated by artificial intelligence will be displayed at the bottom of the video.
It’s taken a while, but we’re excited to share a new tool that helps members of the deaf and hard of hearing communities, said Instagram boss Adam Mosseri.
The objective of this new feature is therefore to improve the accessibility of content on Instagram, especially for people with hearing impairments. At the same time, the addition of subtitles offers a double utility: to allow all users to easily use videos without sound (in public places for example), and thus increase their time of use of the platform.
Currently, subtitles are available in a total of 17 languages, including French.
How to enable or disable subtitles on a video from the stream
The social network gives users the option of activating or deactivating automatic subtitles on videos in their stream. The procedure is simple:
- When viewing a video in your feed, click on the three horizontal dots, located at the top right of the post,
- Press on Manage subtitles,
- Drag the slider to the right to activate them, and to the left to deactivate them.
